A female Penn undergraduate has been brought back to safety after threatening to jump from the roof of the Fresh Grocer parking garage.

Penn Police, the Philadelphia Police and Fire Departments and University and city counselors negotiated with her for about two hours until she eventually climbed back down at about 5:20 p.m.

She was seen exiting the premises in a Penn Police car. Officials would not specify the destination.

"We are extremely grateful that the young woman is safe, and we will work with her and her family to see that she gets the help she needs," the University said in a press statement.

The episode forced Philadelphia police to close 40th Street between Walnut and Chestnut streets from about 3:30 p.m. until 5:45 p.m.

The 23-year-old student - whose name has not been disclosed - had been on leave from the University.

We saw the incident from our high rise window. We were relieved that it ended well.

I witnessed this too. I'm glad she didn't make that jump, but as a mental health worker, I hope she went to a local crisis center.
