It was a bit like New Student Orientation all over again last night for next year's residents of the Radian, as they met with future roommates and hallmates for the first time.

As construction progresses on the Radian, located at 39th and Walnut streets, its future residents gathered last night at Marathon Grill.

The "meet and greet" event was organized by Radian administrators and the developer, Inland American Communities Group. The party attendees, most of whom were Penn students, were treated to food and drink while they got to know each other.

"We wanted to plan an event where the residents could have a chance to meet each other, and in some cases meet their roommates for the first time," IAC's Vice President of Marketing Rachel Kihn said. "And in other cases where they are looking for roommates, they could have a chance to find someone at this event who would match up with them."

She added that many of the students had already met on Facebook.

The event provided an opportunity for the students to discuss their expectations and concerns regarding their future home.

"I just want a place to live with my friends that's small and nice," College junior Michael Zorger said. "But the location is definitely a plus."

Zorger noted that the price of his three-bedroom apartment, which is set at $1,050 per person per month, was a concern at first, but he is no longer worried about it.

The price "includes everything, so once you factor in that you're not paying utilities, not paying for heat, washer, dryer, cable, internet, it works out to be pretty close" compared to other housing options, Zorger said.

Many students were simply excited to forgo the lottery that defines the College House room-selection process.

"I'm afraid that I won't get into the high rises," College freshman Jenay Davis said.

Another major issue for students was year-round lease, a common concern among students who lease rooms off-campus.

Students at the Radian are allowed to sublet their rooms to whomever they choose, provided they notify management.

Radian Community Manager Shelly McClean estimated that at least 100 students attended the event.
