News Brief: Engineering prof wins award for research

Penn Electrical and Systems Engineering professor Nader Engheta received one of Penn Engineering's top honors on Wednesday.
Engheta, who has been named one of the 50 most important leaders in science and technology in America by Scientific American magazine, was presented with the Heilmeier Faculty Award for Excellence in Research.
The annual award recognizes "excellence in scholarly activities of the faculty" and was given to Engheta for his multidisciplinary research on optical circuits that are smaller than wavelengths of light.
Engheta also delivered the Heilmeier Lecture on his work with nanoscale light circuits at Levine Hall's Wu and Chen Auditorium on Wednesday.
His talk focused on details of his research and forecasted practical uses of developments in the field, which he calls metactronics.
Engheta became the seventh winner of the award, which is named after George Heilmeier, a 1958 Penn graduate who currently chairs Telcordia Technologies, a communications software and services provider.
