News Brief: ISC says "wait and see" before upgrading Vista

Penn's Information Systems and Computing staff is recommending a "wait-and-see" approach to updating to Vista's first service pack.
ISC advocated a similar approach when the Windows program itself was first released last year.
The service pack - which was released about a week ago - is mostly a compatibility, reliability and performance upgrade.
The wait-and-see approach is the "standard recommendation for any new version or major update to an operating system from Microsoft or Apple," Mark Aseltine, executive director of technology support services, wrote in an e-mail.
If no significant bugs are identified, Microsoft will release the service pack as an automatic update in April, at which point it will be installed on most Vista systems on Penn's campus, Aseltine wrote.
Still, ISC will support the service pack for students who have already upgraded their personal computers and who order new systems with it pre-installed.
